2017 Reading Log

Source: Instagram whatshouldireadnext

January 2017 was a good month for reading.  I read some really good books this month.  My favorite book was WE WERE LIARS.  I would give this book 5 stars. It was so interesting it was hard to put the book down.  I wanted to take the book with me everywhere so I could read one more page.  I have recommended the book to several people already.

I have purchased so many books with Paris in the title to read this year.  I have decided to read one a month.  The first one I read was I'LL SEE YOU IN PARIS.  This book kept me reading more and more each day.  It surprised me at the end as well.  I thought I could easily see were this was going however I was wrong.  I would give this book 4 stars.

The third fiction book I read was TRULY MADLY GUILTY.  It was so hard to get excited about this book at the beginning.  There was so much bouncing around from character to character.  However the book did keep me interested in finding out more details.  I would give this book 4 stars.

The final book I read was SIMPLIFY 7 GUIDING PRINCIPLES TO HELP ANYONE DECLUTTER THEIR HOME AND LIFE.  Books about simplifying and decluttering are always on my radar to read this time of year. This book did not disappoint me.   I found several take away points:

  • What our heart believes and loves always determines the path of our life.
  • Without a true heart change, we always return to our heart's first love.  This truth applies to all areas of life: our energy, our time, our relationships, our spirituality, our money, and our possessions.
  • When you declutter the decorations and artwork that remain are the pieces that are the most dear to your soul and lives.
  • Everything should have a home.
  • Keep only things that mean the most to you.
  • Register your name with the direct marketing association mail preference service (www.dmachoice.org) and be added to their do not mail list.
  • Opt-out of pre-approved credit cards (optoutprescreen.com)
  • Call companies and get removed from their mailing lists
  • unsubscribe from unwanted emails
This book was a quick read and had lots of helpful suggestions to get started now!  I would give this book 4 stars as well.

The Book Thief was my favorite book this month.  It was one of those books you cannot put down.  I was caught up in the life of the characters and their circumstances.  I just had to know what happens next.  Even after I finished reading the book I still wanted to know more.  I would give this book 5 stars.

I also enjoyed the book Wonder.  This book is written for young adults but the story and characters were very interesting.  It was very educational to hear Augie's point of view about how he sees himself, how he sees how others see him.  I would give this book 5 stars as well.

Maybe the cold weather at the beginning of the month or the lack of daylight some how got this book on my radar.  The Cozy Life is a book about living a Hygge way.  Which is another way of saying a simple, minimalist life with your family.  It said a lot of the same things I read last month, find joy in the simple things and surround yourself with the things you love and treasure.

I did not realize until right now that I did not read any fiction this month.  I guess because I really got taken in by the book Younger Next Year. I spent a lot of time with this book reading and rereading and thinking.  I really didn't want to hear what the author's had to say, however I needed to hear it.  "If you stop moving your bones will decay!"  What! Really!  And they mean exercise....real exercise not walking to the mailbox and cleaning the house.  I've known for a loooooooong time I need to get moving. I just don't seem to make the time for it.  NOW it will be a #1 priority in my life. Dr. Harry has some rules to life by, I typed these up and they are going on my refrigerator to remind me daily what I need to do.
The second book I read I found at Target.  I think I was attracted to the bright pink cover at first.  Then as I paged through it and I was interested in Emily's ideas,  Grace Not Perfection.  It a cute reminder to get your priorities straight.  Don't worry about others, do want is important for you.  Simplify your life and keep only the things you really need and love and get rid of the things that take up space.

Planning is so important...."If you plan to fail, you will fail." So take the time to plan things out so you will succeed.

Emily also had some tips for Menu Planning.  Create your menu once a month and buy the basic items.  It will save you lots of time running back and forth. Although I think I still will be stopping a lot for fresh fruit.

The third book I read, A Year with No Sugar, was an interesting concept.  First of all the author really did not go the entire year with no sugar she had exceptions, however it really got me thinking about how much sugar is added to the food I eat. There are some foods that I honestly don't think I should give up:  1. My GF bread, I know it has added sugar however I think it plays a major role in my improved stomach issues lately.

I am willing to try some smaller challenges and go from there.  For example a month with no candy and cookies.  This is will extremely hard for me.  I think just being aware will help me as well.  I need to start to think of sweet yummy sugar as what is really is something that has no nutritional value at all.  Something that "creates toxic by products in my body....that will result in disease and untimely death.  It is a poison"  for me.  Sugar will cause fatty acids and these fatty acids will speed along the growth of cancer cells.   Hello....I am the person who has had cancer TWO TIMES!!!!  Eve also found that diets high in sugar are linked to cancer, high blood pressure and OBESITY!!!  Again all words that describe ME!

So what am I going to do about it.....this is not really new to me. I know sugar is not good for me, I just didn't realize how much sugar in contained in my regular food, bread, chicken broth, mayonnaise, etc. I thought I was eating healthy most of the time.   I NEED to read the labels and cut back and really focus on how much sugar I am really eating.  I need to be more selective and make healthy choices.  And remember, "Most things that are worthwhile take time, thought and energy." and that's what I need to do when I am selecting the food I eat.

I was able to read five books this month.  I think I am the world's slowest reader.

The first book I read was Rediscover Jesus.  This was the book I read throughout Lent.  It gave me a lot to think about each day and I started a Prayer Journal.  Read More about my thoughts here.....

Next I finished the book Big Magic.  I felt a little strange about this book because I didn't get that warm and fuzzy feeling that every one else got while reading the book.  There were a couple of nuggets I took from the book:

  • creative things that make you happy
  • network with other creative people
  • as long as I am supporting myself and not hurting someone else I should create what I want
  • don't worry about what others think

Then I read three fiction books.  The first one was Paris is Always A Good Idea.  This was an adorable love story.  The characters were like-able and Paris as the setting. So Sweet!  Even the little postcard shop is a magical place for the events of the story to occur.  My favorite aspect of the story was the story centered around a children's author and illustrator.  I would give the story 3 stars.

Then I read the Boston Girl.  This was a really good book.  It is a charming story of a Grandmother retelling her life story to her grand daughter.  It is a wonderful story as she starts from the very beginning of her life all the way through her marriage.  I would give it five stars

Finally I read the book The Last Time We Say Goodbye.  It is a book about teenage suicide and how the family deals with all the emotions.  The author keeps you reading and on the edge of your seat throughout the whole book.  I would give this book five stars.

The Late Talker was a book I read to build my understanding of Apraxia of speech.  Our sweet little grand daughter is struggling with learning to speak.  This book was very helpful is writing to the insurance company to explain to them the need for speech therapy.  The book focuses on finding the correct therapist and tips to encourage and help your child.  Two important things I want to learn more about is the effects of fish oil and look for a charm bracelet for identification.

The Secret of the Hummingbird Cake was a wonderful story about three friends who support each other through their emotional relationships and dealing with one of them having cancer and dying.  There was great character development and relationships throughout the story and the story was very engaging.  I give this story 4 stars.

The Beautiful Day was a wonderful story about a family preparing for a wedding.  The bride had a notebook filled with details for the wedding from her mother who recently passed away.  There is lots of family drama where the family members have to deal with other relationships and moving on from their loss.  I give this book 3 stars.

The Middle Place is an enduring story about an outgoing cheery father and daughter as they both deal with cancer together.  The daughter looks back over her life and her relationships with family and friends and her relationship with her father.  I give this book 3 stars

Yes, I read another Elin Hilderbrand book, The Matchmaker.  This book was very predictable about Dabney who has a gift to set up couples.  She has set up 42 couples but struggles with her own relationships and her daughter's.  When she is diagnosed with cancer she tries her best to set up her loved ones before she dies.  I give this book 3 stars.

I haven't read a Danielle Steel book in years, but I decided to read, Answered Prayers.  This story was extremely predictable and at times repetitive.  The story was about Faith who struggles in her marriage to make her voice heard.  She meets an old family friend at a funeral and together they overcome their fears and build a new relationship.  I give this story 2 stars.

Leaving Time, by Jodi Picoult, was an amazing book.  This book was very interesting and held my attention. I couldn't wait to read the next chapter each day.  There was a lot of information about elephants because Jenna's (the main character) parents both research and worked with elephants. As I read the story I felt like there was two different stories going on Jenna's, Serenity and Virgil search for the truth and Alice's (Jenna's mother) looking back over the events and recalling her research on how elephant cope with loss. In the end I was very surprised.  I give this book 5 stars.

I came across the Paris Wife completely by accident.  It was a story based off the life of Ernest Hemingway and his first wife Hadley. The story is written from Hadley's point of view of how they fall in love, their marriage and the betrayal.  The story was well written and I enjoyed reading the story.  I give this story 4 stars.

In the evening I was reading My Stylish French Girlfriends, this was a unique book.  It is about Sharon's friends that live stylish lives throughout France.  There were a few good take aways in this book: (1)  Always put your family life ahead of other demands.  (2)  Set an example that inspires others to work hard one step at a time. (3) Create delicious meals made with fresh ingredients. (4)  Savor and Enjoy each moment and (5)  Use positive energy to make things happen.

The Habit Guide book was written by one of my favorite bloggers, Leo Babauta.  He has so many good insights on how to develop good habits and work on negative habits.  "Habits are extremely important in changing your life."  Why are habits important???? because they get you to your goals.  Leo suggests focusing on one small habit on a month.  Make it a positive habit that you will look forward to once a day and give it your complete focus.
Do you habit because that's the plan....don't skip it because "I don't feel like it."
Don't miss two days in a row.

Helpful Hints:
  • Journaling
  • send yourself reminders
  • fully commit to the habit
  • create the right environment
  • create accountability
  • set up consequences and rewards
  • set up challenges for yourself
  • Plan your calendar for the week
  • Plan each day, don't rely on your mood.
  • Reduce your food intake slowly
  • Get your spending under control...do not spend more than you make.

My favorite book of May was The Nightingale.  The story takes place in France during WWII.  It is about two sisters whose lives are impacted when the Nazis invade France.  Each sister without sharing with each other does her part to help others during the world. One sister helps her Jewish best friend and the other sister works with the French Resistance and aids Allied Pilots to escape to Spain. This is a 5 star book.

The One and Only is about a young girl, Shea, who has spent her entire life in Walker, Texas.  She is a die heart football fan and worships her best friend's father, who is the coach of the college team in town.  After her best friend's mother passes away, Shea finds herself attracted to her friend's father.  I give this book 3 stars.

Tempting Fate is about a delightful couple, Gabby and Elliot, who have been married for 18 years with 2 daughters.  Their life appears to be perfect.  Then one night Gabby goes out for a "Girls Night Out" and meets a younger man and begins obsessing about him.  After a one night stand Gabby finds herself pregnant.  This changes her life and relationships forever.  I give this book 3 stars.

And finally I read, Fangirl.  I did not really enjoy this book at all.  It is about a young girl Cath and her twin sister Wren who are HUGE Simon Snow Fans.  They are obsessed with the books to the point the Cath writes different versions of them on the internet.  The girls go off to college and go their separate ways. Cath is on her own and she has to navigate through college and life without her sister for the first time.  She falls in love....family drama... happy ending.   I give this book 2 stars.

I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You By C. Maum
I had a hard time identifying with this book.  Although the story was set in Paris I just could not identify with a man who had an affair and then complained the entire story that his wife and mistress left  him.  He is depressed because he misses his old life and wants his wife back....blah, blah, blah....I give this book 2 stars.

The next book I read was The Vatican Princess by C.W. Gortner.  Wow, did this story open my eyes to the sandals in the early Catholic Church. The story is about a famous family of the fifteenth century in Renaissance Italy, The Borgia Family.  Lucrezia is the daughter of the pope.  She is trapped in her families web and forced to choose between family loyalty and survival.  This story has jealousy, family rivalry, revenge and papal politics all rolled into one story.  I give this book 5 stars.

The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin is another historical fiction story that I read this month.  Cora Cash is a young girl who is considered the richest girl in America in the 20th century.  She travels to England with her mother and decides to marry the Duke of Wareham.  (Her mother wants her to have a "Duchess" title.)  But things are not as they seem and Cora learns quickly her money can not buy everything including happiness.  Cora must decide what is her life and marriage worth.  I give this book 4 stars.

Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos is a light hearted story about three college friends who were glued together at the hip during college but afterwards things fall apart. Penn and Will are brought back together to find their friend, Cat.  Throughout Penn and Will's journey they discover their love for each other, however can they forgive the sins of the past and learn to trust each other again.  I give this book 4 stars.

That Summer by Lauren Willig is two stories woven together to create a mystery.  Story 1:  2009  Julia inherits a house near London and begins to clean it out and finds a valuable painting.  As she does this she meets relatives and a young man.  She also begins to remember the facts surrounding the death of her mother. Part 2: Imogen Grantham was trapped in a loveless marriage until she meets Gavin, a painter.  Their love story is sad and tragic. Lots of suspends, I give this story 4 stars.

Then I read, Friendship Bread, by D. Gee.  This story is about Julia who has suffered the loss of a child and is struggling to  hold her life together.  Her daughter finds some friendship bread on the porch. Through the process of sharing the bread Julia meets new friends, begins to deal with her son's death, notices her marriage is failing, and rebuilds the bond with her younger sister.  The friendship bread brings out the best in the community and the families it touches. I give this book 4 stars.

Fish is a Tree by L.M. Hunt is one of those books that makes you think about how you treat the people around you.  Ally is a smart girl in 6th grade but she has dyslexia.  She has been in many different schools and has been able to hide it by being very disruptive in class.  At her new school Mr. Daniels is able to see through this and is willing to reach out to Ally and teach her to read and understand that she is not stupid.  I give this book 5 stars.

Hungry Heart by J. Weiner, is a fun and humorous collection of real stories from Jennifer Weiner's life.  All the stories center around what lead her to be the writer she is today.  I give this book 3 stars.

A Spool of Blue Thread by A. Tyler is the story of the Whitshank Family.  The story is mainly told in Abby's voice by it jumps around from generation to generation that all grew up in the same house.   Abby and Red had four children and lots of memories and secrets. Personally I would have liked this story told in chronological order.  I think it would have been easier to follow.  However it is a very good story.  I give this story 4 stars.

The final book I am reading this month is Before We were Yours, by L. Wingate.  I'll be honest I have not finished this book however I am totally involved in the book.  I am always looking for free moments in my day when I can squeeze in a few more pages of this book.  It is about a young women, Avery,  who is trying to figure out her grandmother's mysterious past.  Her grandmother is in a nursing home and has Alzheimer's so her is forced to look for clues on her own.  Right now I would give this book 5 stars.

I started using Instagram last month and started following some avid book readers as well as following the blog Modern Mrs. Darcy and I have read many references to the Jane Austen books.  So I decided to find out what all the talk was about.  So I set out this the month to read all her books.  I found this cute set of books at Half Price books and started reading. As I expected the books her books are about romance however I didn't expect there to be humor in the books.  I don't think I am going to write a recap of the stories because most people have read the stories I just want to say I really liked all the books but I think Pride and Prejudice was my favorite.  Here is how I would rank the stories:
1.  Pride and Prejudice
2.  Sense and Sensibility
3.  Emma
4.  Northanger Abby
5.  Mansfield Park
6.  Persuasion

I found this fun little quiz Which Jane Austen Heroine Are You? Check it out it was fun to see which character was most like me.  Here are my results. It sounds pretty much like me.

I read two other books this month.  First I read,  One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid.  From the beginning you sort of know what will happen however it is so sad.  I cried several times throughout the story.  The book is hard to put down you just want to know what will happen.  How will Emma move on, who will she choose?  How can she choose?  I give this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.  You will just love it.

The other book I read was Why Not Me?  by Mindy Kaling.  This book was about Mindy telling it like it is in Hollywood and show business.  She wrote about several experiences from her life...blah blah blah....she is very funny but the story doesn't really go anywhere. Mindy has worked hard to get to where she is and she is very funny. That's what I got out of it.   I give it ⭐⭐.

Wow!!! I read some amazing books this month.  I've been trying for days to think about which book was my favorite and to be honest I have a three way tie.  I absolutely loved All the Bright PlacesEverything, Everything, and Inside the O'Briens A very close second would be Mrs. Mike

It is so hard to choose because I fell in love with the characters of all the books and I didn't want to stories to end.  I just wanted to know more, what happened next?  How did they go on? Where did they go from there?

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven,  this young adult book deals with a serious subject, suicide.  Violet and Theodore's love story is amazing.  They come together in a very unlikely circumstance.   It sends a strong message to teenagers that their actions no matter how small can have an impact on others.  Think before you act!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon, is another young adult book. This book is a story of first love between Maddy and Olly.  Of course it is not that easy,  Maddy is allergic is everything.  She is a girl that has to live in sterilized house.  No germs are allowed in the house at all.  She is a girl who lives through books and her computer.  Olly and his troubled family moves in next door to Maddy and their friendship grows from there.  "What would you risk for love?" is the question Maddy must face. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Five People You Will Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom, was about an old man, Eddie, who passes away and goes to heaven and meets five people.  You have to read a lot about his life to see how the five people fit into his life.  Eddie also works through a lot of his own relationships as well.  I had a hard time staying focused in this book.  There was so much background information that you had to read to get to the point.  I lost interest several times.  ⭐⭐⭐

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, by E.L. Konigsburg, is one of my favorite books from my childhood.  I loved this book as a child and I decided to reread it.  I'm glad I did because I had forgotten a lot of details from the story.  The book is about Claudia and Jamie as they decided to run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.  The sibling interaction is humorous and some of the details are funny because you know there is no way that could happen in modern times.  I still think it is a great children's book.  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Inside the O'Briens, by Lisa Genova, is an amazing story about Joe O'Brien and his family.  It is a heart breaking story about how Huntington Disease takes away so much from you, your job, your friends, your respect, and your life.  As Joe struggles with all of this he has to live with the fact that he has passed this disease down to his children and possible grandchildren.  The book is just a great reminder to not judge people....treat others with kindness and respect.  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

In the Unlikely Event, by Judy Blume, was an easy pick for me because I have always loved a book written by Judy Blume.  I have been reading her books since I was a little girl and I love that she is writing for adults.  The story is about a young girl, Miri, who grows up in Elizabeth, New Jersey.  In one year there are three different airplane crashes in their small town.  How does this affect the people in the town?  Miri and her friends and family are impacted by the crashed.  This is a good story as well.  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Mrs. Mike, by Benedice and Nancy Freedman, is an amazing story of a young girl, Kathy, who at the age of 16 moves from Boston to Alberta Canada during the 1800.  She falls in love in Mike Flannigan, a Canadian Mountie, and move further North into the wilderness. Living in the wilderness has brings many friendships, challenges and tragic events.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Lemonade War, by Jacqueline Davies, is another children's book I read based on a recommendation from Instagram.  It was a cute story about brother/sister jealousy.  It is also a good book to start a discussion about accepting others and working towards your personal strengths.  ⭐⭐⭐

The Prayer Box, by Lisa Wingate, is a wonderful story about a focusing on yourself and working hard.  Tandi is a single mother who is struggling raising her two teenage children.  She comes across some hidden boxes when cleaning out an old house and she discovers a whole new life for herself. My only disappointment with this story is that I thought is was going to some how tie together with The Sea Glass Sisters which is did not for me.⭐⭐⭐

The Sea Glass Sisters, by Lisa Wingate, is a short story that I thought was an introduction to The Prayer Box.  The story was about Elizabeth who is an overworked mother who is at the end of her rope. She is dealing with a lot and needs a break from life.  She goes on a road trip with her mother.  Dealing with her mother and her aunt things start to fall back in place.⭐⭐⭐

The Time Traveler's Wife, Audrey Niffenegger, is another great book. Clare and Henry have an unusual relationship.  Clare is an artist and Henry is a librarian and a time traveler.  As they attempt to live a normal life they face many challenges from Henry's uncontrollable time traveling. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Waiting for Morning, by Karen Kingsbury, is what I would call Christian Fiction.  It is a story about both sides of drunk driving issue and turning away from your faith when you need it most.  It is a sad story and it tears at your heart because as a parent/wife it hits at your worst fear.  Even though I cried several times throughout the story, I felt the story was a bit repetitive and predictable. ⭐⭐⭐

Wow!!! I'm very late with this post.  As you can tell from my lack of posting, life is very busy around here.  No time for projects lately.  Just the necessities of daily living.  Even my reading has degreased.  That's what happens when you work and babysit ALL day and then go straight to bed, get up and repeat.
Audiobooks have been my best friend this month, I listen to them as a drive from one place to the next.
Heaven is for Real, by Todd Burpo, is about is an experience his young son as gone through.  As a very young child Colton had a serious medical operation.  As he grows up and has conversations with his parents he surprises his parents with his knowledge of what happened at the hospital and heaven. He begins to describe Jesus, and the angels, and other family members who are now in heaven whom he has never met on Earth.  This is a true story and will make you think about the world after Earth.  I give this book ⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.
Eleanor & Park, by Rainbow Rowell, is a beautiful story of two students who don't quiet fit in at school.  In fact, the other students pick on Eleanor constantly but Park stands up for her. Park is a true friend, he shares things with her and helps Eleanor find the courage to face the struggles with her family and the other students at school.  The ending is surprising as well.  I give this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.

All The Light We Cannot See, by Anothony Doerr is amazing.  I guess that is why it won the Pulitzer Prize.  It it a complex story about two different lives during WWII. A young, blind, french girl (Marie-Laure) and a young german boy(Werner).  The chapters alternate telling their stories and perspectives during the war until one day their lives collide.  You will hold your breath during the last few chapters unable to put the book down. I give this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5 stars.
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, by G. Zevin, is a fun and humorous story about A.J. Fikry is a grumpy man who is already set in his ways.  He lives alone and runs a bookstore and at the end of each night he drinks himself to sleep. His life begins to change when he meets two people, a young rep from a publishing company and a little girl named Maya.  The ending of the book completing surprised me, I didn't expected that ending in a romance novel.  I would give this book ⭐⭐⭐🌟 /5 stars. It gets the extra shiny star because it has a book theme to it.
Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella, is a funny and quirky book about a young girl, Audrey, who has gone through a dramatic experience at school and is now afraid to socialize with others and leave her home.  The family drama around her is hilarious and with the help from her brother's friend she is able to go out into the world....or at least to Starbucks.  I give this book ⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.  If you are you are looking for a light and fun read.....this is your book.

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen, was another young adult book I read this month.  Sydney feels like she lives in the shadow of the disaster of a life her brother,Payton has created.  She is embarrassed and ashamed by how her brother and her mother are dealing with the situation.  On top of that her brother's creeping friend, who her mother thinks is so wonderful, keeps hanging around. Sydney meets Mac and his younger sister who step in and become her new friends and make her feel loved and help her work through accepting and dealing with what her brother did.  I would give this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.

The Bookshop Around the Corner, by Jenny Coligan, was a truly delightful book.  I think this book captured my heart this month. It made me want to go out and buy a little bookstore in a little town or maybe even a little bookmobile that I could drive from one fresh market to another.  OK reality check.....that would not work with my lifestyle.....The story was adorable.  Nina, the main character was interesting and easy to relate to.  Of course, it was a romance novel, but watch out because life does not alway work out the way you think it will.  I would give this book ⭐⭐⭐🌟/5 stars.  It gets the extra shiny star because it has a book theme to it.

Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, by David Sedaris, is a book about David's life.  I began to listen to this book, is was just rambling and rambling of different situations in David's life.  I just didn't relate.  So I stopped listening halfway through....I felt like I was wasting time.  Sorry David...this midwestern, catholic girl just didn't get it.

Crossing to Safety, by Wallace Steiner, has a home town appeal to me.  I live in Wisconsin and part of the story takes place in my state capital, Madison.  I am only 1/2 way through this book I thought I would be finished by now but I have had to set it aside for now.  I am just too busy to finish this book.

I read some really good books this month.  It was really hard for me to pick a favorite because a couple of these books were really good for different reasons.  However when it all came down to it, I read for entertainment and Where'd You Go, Bernadette won that category hands down.

My favorite book this month is Where'd you Go, Bernadette, by Maria Semple, it is an humorous and exciting audiobook. I enjoyed listening to this book so much.  I laughed so much throughout this story it reminded me so much of many of the interactions and conversations I have with my daughter.  I give this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.
Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay, is an amazing story.  The story alternates between the lives of Sarah a ten year old living in Paris in 1942 and Julia, a mother and wife, living in Paris in 2002.  Sarah's story is heartbreaking and I was completing unaware of this part of history. Julia's story was equally enlightening, it was surprising to me that most french people tend to pretend the round up didn't happen. I give this story ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5 stars.
Still Life, was my first Louise Penny book.  I have been reading a lot about the books by Louise Penny on Instagram and I wanted to find out what the hype is all about.  I just loved the characters from Three Pines and Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is adorable.  I am not the only person who wanted to read the book because I signed up on Overdrive to read the book and I was 227 on the wait list so I broke down and purchased the book.  The book was well worth the money, it was a good mystery story, I give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.

The Bookseller by Cynthia Swanson, is a unique and intriguing book. Kitty Miller, the main character, has an amazing bookstore and a great best friend.  However her dreams are starting to take over her life to the point where she is beginning to confuse her real life with her dream life.  This book will keep you on the edge of your seat reading and reading.  I give this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.
Small Blessings by Martha Woodroof, is just a feel good story.  It was just heartwarming and adorable.  The plot was predictable however I continued to read because I really liked the characters and wanted to read the happy ending.  I give this book ⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.
I read another, Elin Hilderbrand book, The Rumor, it was a charming story.  The characters were easy to identify with and the plot has several turns in it that kept me reading.  It was a wonderful reminder that friends are truly important people in our lives.  I give this book ⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.

I read, Eat Pretty Every Day: 365 Daily Inspiration for Nourishing Beauty Inside and Out by Jolene Hart, for my morning reflection this month.  I loved the cover of the book, however I was a bit disappointed with the actual book.  I picked up a few suggestions to improve my living:

  • Little Daily habits become your foundation of your lifestyle, mindset and identity...and this....will add up to dramatic change.
  • I need to slow down and make time for yourself.
  • I need to add daily stretching back into my morning routine: it improve circulation and it calms the nervous system.
  • Eat more veggies and drink more tea!!!!!!
  • Create a new reward system for yourself.
  • Create an indoor garden for peaceful, healthy living.
I give this book ⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.
November was a busy month.  I tried my best to read as much as possible but family keeps me busy.  I enjoyed the books I did  read several of them were really good.  I read three mysteries and four books about books.  That sounds strange but I am obsessed with reading books about books/bookstores/libraries.

My favorite book of the month was Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, by Robin Sloan.  I found this one by accident on Overdrive and I loved it. I picked this book because it had the word "bookstore" in it and I thought that I would at least give it a try as an audiobook.  It has a bit of mystery with a conspiracy and lot of high tech references. There was even a bit of a romance and humor.  I absolutely enjoyed this book.  I couldn't wait to get in the car to listen to this book each day. Don't tell my family but I took the long way home several times just to listen a bit longer.   I gave this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5.
A Fatal Grace, by Louis Penny, was a wonderful mystery.  I just love the character Inspector Armand Gamache.  The rest of the characters in Three Pines are interesting as well if not quirky.  This story takes place during the winter around Christmas and I found it interesting how all the pieces fell in place. I give this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.
Of course, I quickly downloaded the audio version of the third story in the Louis Penny series, The Cruelest Month.  What I liked about this story was that it focused a bit more on Inspector Armand and his family.  As with all the stories, it takes place in Three Pines, but I found the supporting characters of Three Pines a bit frustrating and somewhat unbelievable in this story. I gave this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.
The third mystery book I read this month was A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas.  The title really has nothing to do with the story.  The story was about a young lady who intensionally lets herself become a women who becomes an outcast in her society.  She runs away from home and tries to find her own way in London.  She is unable to find a job because she has no recommendations.  However she does have a talent, she can read people and solve crimes.  This book has so many turns and twists it keeps you reading.  I give this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.  I cannot wait to read the second book in this series.
The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend, by Katarina Bivald, was a pleasant surprise.  When I read the review on Amazon, I thought, I'm not so sure what to expect.  However,  I really did enjoy this book.  I found it to be humorous and fun to read.  It takes place in a small town in Iowa and you think no way would this happen but that is what makes the story funny.  Of course any book that has a book store in it get extra stars in my rating system.  I gave this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.

I read Dear Farenheit 451, during Thanksgiving break and I was a bit disappointed.  I read a lot of wonderful things about this book and how humorous it is and yes I did have a couple good laughs.  However there were lots of times were I just skimmed through the letters because I just didn't have much interest.  I do like the idea of writing a letter to a book with your response.  I gave this book ⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.
The Borrower, by Rebecca Makkai, was yet another story about books and a librarian.  The story was so heart-warming at first about how the librarian helps a young boy read books after school, however when the little boy decides to run away that's when I started to go crazy as an educator.  As a read I kept saying, What??? No!!!! She wouldn't do that!!! That's not realistic....somebody would have put two and two together.  All and all it was a somewhat happy ending but I would still give it ⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.

My last book of November was, One Summer Day in Rome, by Mark Lamprell.   I won this book in early fall from @bookwormeverlasting and @flatiron_books.  I have been looking forward to reading this book for awhile.  The story takes place over several days in Rome with three different couples and at the very end the author ties the couples together.  I have to be honest, there were several times in the book where I lost my focused.  Maybe my mind is on Christmas and struggling with the idea of summer right now but I had a hard time with this story.  Maybe because there was not a bookstore or a library or no reindeer, but for not I gave this story ⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.
It's the end of the year and I hit personal record in my reading log since I started recording my books, I read 91 books this year.  I have cut down A LOT on my television watching and began listening to books while driving and working around the house.  I have found some wonderful readers on Instagram that recommend lots of great books and I have taken advantage of their knowledge.
I have even found book decorating inspiration on Instagram as well and reorganized my office bookshelves.
My favorite book this month was The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey.  This book takes place in 1920 in Alaska.  The main characters, Jack and Mable are finding life in Alaska rough.  During the first snowfall of the season Jack and Mable build a snow girl.  The next morning the snow girl is gone however they spot a little girl in the woods.  What I enjoyed about this book was reading about what life was like during this period and time in Alaska.  I enjoyed reading how the community looked out for one another.  This is a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5 star book.  The book is well written and the characters are very interesting especially Faina.  The book keeps you guessing all the way to the end of the story.
Winter Solstice, by Elin Hilderbrandt, is the fourth  and final book in the Quinn family story.  It also tied in some characters from another book I read by Ms. Hilderbrandt, The Rumor.  I enjoyed the book however I felt the book was just recapping or wrapping up things.  This is a ⭐⭐⭐ /5 star book in my opinion.  What I liked about this book was the caring feeling you felt between Margaret and Kelly.  At times I wished there was more about Margaret and less about her children.

In the fictitious coastal village of Mount Polbearne, is where the story Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery, by Jenny Colgan takes place.   Polly is preparing her little bakery for Christmas.  She is excited to celebrate the Holiday with her boyfriend and best girl friend.

Although life is a bit crazy for Polly and she ends up catering Christmas for her best friend.  Many events around her feel very strange and Polly can't quite put her finger on it.  As things begin to unravel around Polly and she is sure the Holiday is ruined her friends pull together to give Polly the ultimate Christmas surprise. Although I found this story to be very cute I would only give it ⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.

A Redbird Christmas, by Fannie Flagg, is a charming story about a community coming together to help one little girl.  The story takes place in a rural little town in Alabama along a river.  Oswald, moves there from Chicago, because he has some health issues and his doctor recommends this little town for healing.  There he meets a town of wonderful people all willing to help a little girl. This is a magical ⭐⭐⭐/5 star Christmas story that will not disappoint you. The story brings out the best Christmas spirit in the entire community.
The Light We Lost, by Jill Santopolo, is a love story for all ages.  Lucy and Gabe fall in love in college.  After 911, they decided that want their lives to mean something.  They some how want to make a difference in the world.  Gabe and Lucy have to make a choice between love and their dreams and of course they decide that their dream to make a difference is more important than love.  But now thirteen years later, do they still feel the same way???? And is it to late???? Although I was unhappy with decisions the characters made throughout the story I still think this is a ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 story.
Dashing Through the Snow, by Debbie Macomber, is a typical Winter romance story.  Unusually circumstances bring Dash and Ashley together on Christmas Eve however by the end of their car ride to Seattle they find themselves in love with each other.  However now they must get over this misunderstanding with the FBI.  This a cute, fun and a quick read it is a ⭐⭐⭐/5 star story.

I  know another book about Paris and a bookshop....what could be better???  The Little Paris Bookshop is about Monsieur Perdu who can just look at a person and find the perfect book for him/her.  However, he can not let go of his own personal  hardship.  The love of his life left him and passed away. She only left a letter, which he never opened.

After twenty years, he reads the letter and impulsively takes his boat down the Seine toward the South of France to make peace with the past.  He meets lots of interesting characters along the way and eventually his heart begins to heal and he is able to find love again.

Chief Inspector Gamache and his wife Reine-Marie are celebrating their wedding anniversary at an isolated inn not far from Three Pines in A Rule Against Murder.  The well-to-do Finney family is there as well celebrating their father who passed away years ago.  Peter and Clara also come for the family reunion, Peter belongs to the rich Finney family and all the drama that goes with them.  During a terrible storm one night one of the Peter's sister is killed and everyone at the inn becomes a suspect.  We learn a lot about Peter and Clara in this book.  This is a ⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5 book.

A murdered body has been found in Olivier's Bistro, but how did the body get there?  Chief Inspector Armand Gamache comes to Three Pines again in, The Brutal Telling, to solve the case, however Olivier is lying....but why????   Gamache is following all the clues, but each clue uncovers another lie of Olivier.  This case will shake Three Pines to it's core.   This is a ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 star book and it will keep you guessing all the way to the end.
