May Reading Log

The Late Talker was a book I read to build my understanding of Apraxia of speech.  Our sweet little grand daughter is struggling with learning to speak.  This book was very helpful is writing to the insurance company to explain to them the need for speech therapy.  The book focuses on finding the correct therapist and tips to encourage and help your child.  Two important things I want to learn more about is the effects of fish oil and look for a charm bracelet for identification.

The Secret of the Hummingbird Cake was a wonderful story about three friends who support each other through their emotional relationships and dealing with one of them having cancer and dying.  There was great character development and relationships throughout the story and the story was very engaging.  I give this story 4 stars.

The Beautiful Day was a wonderful story about a family preparing for a wedding.  The bride had a notebook filled with details for the wedding from her mother who recently passed away.  There is lots of family drama where the family members have to deal with other relationships and moving on from their loss.  I give this book 3 stars.

The Middle Place is an enduring story about an outgoing cheery father and daughter as they both deal with cancer together.  The daughter looks back over her life and her relationships with family and friends and her relationship with her father.  I give this book 3 stars

Yes, I read another Elin Hilderbrand book, The Matchmaker.  This book was very predictable about Dabney who has a gift to set up couples.  She has set up 42 couples but struggles with her own relationships and her daughter's.  When she is diagnosed with cancer she tries her best to set up her loved ones before she dies.  I give this book 3 stars.

I haven't read a Danielle Steel book in years, but I decided to read, Answered Prayers.  This story was extremely predictable and at times repetitive.  The story was about Faith who struggles in her marriage to make her voice heard.  She meets an old family friend at a funeral and together they overcome their fears and build a new relationship.  I give this story 2 stars.

Leaving Time, by Jodi Picoult, was an amazing book.  This book was very interesting and held my attention. I couldn't wait to read the next chapter each day.  There was a lot of information about elephants because Jenna's (the main character) parents both research and worked with elephants. As I read the story I felt like there was two different stories going on Jenna's, Serenity and Virgil search for the truth and Alice's (Jenna's mother) looking back over the events and recalling her research on how elephant cope with loss. In the end I was very surprised.  I give this book 5 stars.

I came across the Paris Wife completely by accident.  It was a story based off the life of Ernest Hemingway and his first wife Hadley. The story is written from Hadley's point of view of how they fall in love, their marriage and the betrayal.  The story was well written and I enjoyed reading the story.  I give this story 4 stars.

In the evening I was reading My Stylish French Girlfriends, this was a unique book.  It is about Sharon's friends that live stylish lives throughout France.  There were a few good take aways in this book: (1)  Always put your family life ahead of other demands.  (2)  Set an example that inspires others to work hard one step at a time. (3) Create delicious meals made with fresh ingredients. (4)  Savor and Enjoy each moment and (5)  Use positive energy to make things happen.

The Habit Guide book was written by one of my favorite bloggers, Leo Babauta.  He has so many good insights on how to develop good habits and work on negative habits.  "Habits are extremely important in changing your life."  Why are habits important???? because they get you to your goals.  Leo suggests focusing on one small habit on a month.  Make it a positive habit that you will look forward to once a day and give it your complete focus.
Do you habit because that's the plan....don't skip it because "I don't feel like it."
Don't miss two days in a row.

Helpful Hints:
  • Journaling
  • send yourself reminders
  • fully commit to the habit
  • create the right environment
  • create accountability
  • set up consequences and rewards
  • set up challenges for yourself
  • Plan your calendar for the week
  • Plan each day, don't rely on your mood.
  • Reduce your food intake slowly
  • Get your spending under control...do not spend more than you make.

My favorite book of May was The Nightingale.  The story takes place in France during WWII.  It is about two sisters whose lives are impacted when the Nazis invade France.  Each sister without sharing with each other does her part to help others during the world. One sister helps her Jewish best friend and the other sister works with the French Resistance and aids Allied Pilots to escape to Spain. This is a 5 star book.

The One and Only is about a young girl, Shea, who has spent her entire life in Walker, Texas.  She is a die heart football fan and worships her best friend's father, who is the coach of the college team in town.  After her best friend's mother passes away, Shea finds herself attracted to her friend's father.  I give this book 3 stars.

Tempting Fate is about a delightful couple, Gabby and Elliot, who have been married for 18 years with 2 daughters.  Their life appears to be perfect.  Then one night Gabby goes out for a "Girls Night Out" and meets a younger man and begins obsessing about him.  After a one night stand Gabby finds herself pregnant.  This changes her life and relationships forever.  I give this book 3 stars.

And finally I read, Fangirl.  I did not really enjoy this book at all.  It is about a young girl Cath and her twin sister Wren who are HUGE Simon Snow Fans.  They are obsessed with the books to the point the Cath writes different versions of them on the internet.  The girls go off to college and go their separate ways. Cath is on her own and she has to navigate through college and life without her sister for the first time.  She falls in love....family drama... happy ending.   I give this book 2 stars.
